The 2072 flu pandemic (December 2071 – November 2072) was a deadly influenza pandemic, which was artificially engineered to be used as a weapon. It infected more than 600 million people across the world, including remote Pacific islands and the Arctic, and resulted in the deaths of 70 million, making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history.
Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast, the 2072 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. Investigations have concluded that the virus kills through a cytokine storm (overreaction of the body's immune system) and general organ failure. The strong immune reactions of young adults ravaged the body, whereas the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults suffered from massive organic failure. Victims usually suffered from hypoxia giving the patients a blue hue, for which the disease was named after.
The former terrorist organization ASF is held responsible for the the virus engineering and spreading at the Doha International Airport.
