The Dragoon Project is an Earth Republic project designed to create Humanoid Mechanised Armoured Assault Walkers (HMAAWs), also named Dragoons, to provide greater mobility, while still retaining armour in battle.
The first known record of the project is from 1916. The British forces contained one early prototype, deployed during the Battle of the Somme. The prototype provided little benefit, as it was incapacitated after falling in a trench.
The project was reinvigorated in 1940, to assist Allied forces in Western Desert Campaign. The new, vastly superior Dragoons proved too powerful for the Axis powers, and led the Allies to a desicive victory. The project then became a permanent military endeavour, and multiple Dragoons were seen in subsequent battles of the war.
Dragoon IIs began development in 2048, and featured a more humanoid design. They were faster, stronger, and more agile than their predecessors. Dragoon IIs were used extensively during wars in the Middle East, and in NATO’s later imperialist expansions. Soon, other nations had begun to manufacture Dragoons, particularly the Middle Eastern Republic - initially using the NATO’s Gales, but later on, their own Janissaries, to combat extremist insurgents - and the Asia Cooperation Dialogue, to combat NATO expansion in East Asia. During the Third World War, Dragoons were used almost exclusively in place of other land vehicles.
Since the formation of the Elysian Federation, Dragoon IIs have gone out of service, being replaced by Dragoon IIIs and the Dragoon Z Program.
Nearing the end of WWIII, NATO forces began constructing a new type of Dragoon, designed for long-ranged support. Dragoon IIIs were largely unsuccessful and so were retired, but have since been reintroduced by the United Republic of Earth.
